Whiskey Tasting

I'm starting to think about a Christmas present for my boyfriend. Recently, he has developed an interest in whiskey and I was considering buying him a bottle along with tickets to a tasting. I cannot find tasting events in the DC area. Any info on events? Any suggestions on where I should go to purchase the whiskey?
