There are a few exceptions, which are easy to spot if the bottle costs only a few dozen Dollars. The label could also indicate the term “Extra”, which is generally an indication that it has been aged 50 or more years. With very few exceptions, cognacs do not have a vintage year on the label. Keep in mind that all cognacs are blends of different vintages and the age is determined by the oldest vintage in the blend. Hardy, a well-known French producer makes a 50-year old cognac by the name of “Hardy Noces D’Or”. It should cost you around $150 or so. This one should be easy to find. There are others and a little Google search should give you several names from which to choose. Write the names down and visit your retailer. Hope this helps.
David, the best thing to do is to visit your favorite retailer and talk to him/her. Most upscale places are familiar with the terminology of cognacs and can help you get what you want.
