Posted by Kurt M. on 7/1/2004, 10:20 am You should be able to obtain a wide variety of liqueurs that are not grain-based. Just stay away from the ones that combine whiskey or vodka as a base or added for flavor. Many cream type liqueurs, e.g. Irish Cream or Egg Nog, contain grain-based spirits such as whiskey. So you want to read the label carefully since most proudly advertise the inclusion of a whiskey. If in doubt ask the sales person. Fruit-based liqueurs almost never contain grains as additives and neither do liqueurs that are herbal based, such as cherries, Sambuca or Jagermeister. Similarly, schnapps is primarily made from fruits, such as apple, peppermint, peach, black cherry, cinnamon, and berries, although some may contain grain-based additions. My recommendation is to consult with the sales person and ask a lot of questions.
Barb, the vast majority of liqueurs are made from crushed and fermented fruits and nuts, a combination of various herbs and spices, while others are chocolate or honey based. There are only a few liqueurs that are grain based. I assume by liqueur you are referring to cordials vice whiskey or vodka.
