I am the Market Controller for Jefferson-Pilot Communications in the Denver division and are responsible for five radio stations. We, as many stations did, received a letter from Initiative Media (Western) threatening that if we do not go EI with them that we would pay fines, so naturely we switched to EI. However since that time we have not received one cent quicker, nor have we seen the improvement in any of our receivables that was raved about at all BCFM's since 1998. The stations are also taken on a financial burden per month to stay linked to this electronic service. In as far as I can see this industry has a black mark, and that black mark is national, and now Local agencies are not paying within a timely period. We have one agency, BBDO that is currently paying within 90 days, all other are taking advantage of more than 100 days to pay their bills. Now that the word is out, local agencies are slowing their pay.
If there is one issue that could bring together every radio, TV, and cable station, it is this issue. It just surprises me that the BCFM conference does not mention one word of this. Is that really smart and do these conference really relate to what is happening in this industry. I would love to speak about a grass-roots approach to getting the attention of all national agencies, and maybe thier clients would like to know that radio, TV , and Cable are being paid some 60 to 90 days later.
