Posted by NewOnTheBlock on 12/28/2006, 1:38 am BQ Talks posts had complained that Asian arrivals did not give businesses to locals. After reading the posts on BQ Talks, I thought I would give the American merchants a chance at serving my home repair needs. I was ripped off outright. I am sorry to have given them a chance. (That was my hard earned money. And this was right before Thanksgiving.) I had a roof leak. I decided to give an American roofer a chance at servicing my roof. He took my money and ran. He slapped a coat of roofing cement on the seams of roofing material WITHOUT a mesh and called it "job done". Hardly. Without a mesh, the roofing cement would cracked over the winter, leading to more leaks. WHAT A RIP OFF!!!! No wonder Asians tend to use their own people for their needs. Yes, I am an immigrant who bought into the American Dream and moved into Bayside, NY. But I still romance the Hong Kong I once knew. In those colonial days, Hong Kong is a true melting pot. Like America, it was the land of opportunities. New arrivals came ashore daily, quite literally. However, there is honor, boldness and commarraderie among the struggling poor. Because of their daily struggle, they never forgot to stick together against the bullies and the dishonest merchants out for a quick pick. They boldly stand together to force the bullies and the dishonest merchants to give back their loot (and to give the new arrivals a chance). It did not matter which clan they were from or which village they came. They were all so-journers in search a new beginning and a better tomorrow. Perhaps America is too easy and the struggle subsides quicker through the generations. In America, THERE IS NO SUCH COMMARADERIE AGAINST BULLIES AND DISHONEST MERCHANTS. There is only disdaint for the newly arrived in America and in the neighborhood. If BQ Talks on BaysideQueens.com is to be a force for America, there should be more outcry against folks ripping off new arrivals in the neighborhood than lamenting the lost of old ways. Believe it or not, not every Asian family that moves into Bayside, NY has tons of money. Many struggle daily to give their children a chance at a brighter future. They do not mind the hard work and the risk for a chance at the American Dream. It is the bullies, the dishonest merchants and tradesmens and the greedy developers that deserve our disdaint. NOT the hard working families who earned the right to move into the neighborhood at the cost of an arm and a leg, sometimes literally. That is why I still romance Hong Kong, the British Crown Colony as the TRUE melting pot. America, and Bayside, NY in particular, falls far too short of the honor.
