Best area

I am considering moving to Bayside later this year or early next year. I currently don't drive, so I would be relying on the LIRR and Buses. What area within Bayside would be best and very safe under these circumstances. I am also trying to figure out if I should rent or buy at this time. Any input would be appreciated.
