vinvolved Nottinghamshire has been asked to put together a programme of regular community volunteering sessions for a small group of (4 – 5) young people aged 16 to 18 with varying degrees of autism. I have seen some of the tasks and activities which they have undertaken during the last few months and I have been very impressed. The group are able to do many practical and creative tasks including making papier mache/wire sculptures, planting trees, painting murals, bulb-planting, litter picks, planting up hanging baskets etc. The sessions are due to take place from September 09 until July 10 one morning a week (probably Thursdays) during term time and will last around 2 hours. It is possible for tasks which will take longer than two hours to be carried out across several sessions. The young people would always have the support and supervision of two staff whilst on task.
We are hoping that the young people will be able to achieve the v50 award during the programme.
Does your organisation have a task or activity which you would like these young people to carry out? Some tasks may be carried out on site whilst others may be done in a training room at the NORSACA college. No idea is too bizarre until we have discussed it!
Please get in touch with me by end July 2009.
