My first overwhelming impression was "Cut and paste music, voiceover, dancing scenes, countryside shots and Feisty Independent Woman from Sense & Sensibility and Pride & Prejudice trailers, shake well and pour". Honestly, even the opening voiceover text is almost exactly the same as P&P (i.e., in a time when the most important thing was to marry, Elizabeth Bennet (i.e. Jane Austen) has her own ideas. I wonder if they did that on purpose to emphasise that this is the relationship that was "supposed' to inspire P&P?

    *sighs*

It looks okay, I guess. I'm pleased to see that they've given Anne some nice, witty Jane-like lines. Her accent sounds great. I guess it just still bothers me that the first time someone is doing a film version of her life, they're putting so much emphasis on (and really fictionally building up) this Tom Lefroy thing. From the scarce facts that are known she seems to have definitely fancied him, and she may well have been disappointed when he didn't continue to court her, but it looks like they are turning him into THE pivotal element in her life that was 'responsible' for the masterpieces she turned out later. Ah well. I shall reserve final judgement until I have the chance to see the movie.
