A clean faced bird can have the modifier genes needed to produce perfectly balanced full upright tufts but they will remain hidden until crossed with a tufted bird. Therefore, when you do get nicely tufted chicks, keep track of the clean faced parents as well. You will find that some clean faced parents will tend to produce better tufted chicks than others.

I have found that using birds with big tufts produced more birds with big tufts. I have also found that tuft shape and balance follows family lines. However, I started with a single tufted bird and she only had one tuft. From her, All the tufts hatched on our farm originate back to that single single-tufted bird. Most of our tufted chicks now hatch with two tufts.
