Posted by Karen on 7/27/2006, 1:42 am, in reply to "which ones to keep" When I first started I didn't know anything about chicken genetics & kept either the colors I liked or the rumpless tufted ones. But I soon realized I wasn't getting anywhere. My colors were all mixed up and some had yellow legs & some had willow legs. Something else to remember is that a rooster with large tufts doesn’t necessarily pass on large tufts and sometimes a hen or rooster that doesn’t look like they have tufts can have chicks with tufts. You have to decided what you like or what you want to accomplish. Have a goal & pick the ones that will help reach the goal whether or not they are rumpless or tufted or even if the color isn't quite right. But always keep some that are rumpless or tufted so you don't lose the gene. It would help to know background on the roosters. Did they all have the same parents? What color were the parents? Are the solid black ones male or female? Because of the sex hormones females can be solid black while their brothers or father can have red or silver in the hackles, wings & saddle. If you have black roosters with red or silver it means they don't have all the "helper" genes to make them all black. The white ones with red on the wings sound like they are dominant white could be recessive white, but I would go with dominant white because it doesn’t cover red. Recessive white makes a whiter white. You can't tell what you have with splash ( unless you know what the parents are) except that you have two copies of blue (Bl//Bl). Karen
