I penned some hens with no roo till all their eggs were clears after incubation. I added a young roo and waited a few days then set eggs. nadda, all clears...waited a few days, set some more...nadda again. Humm, his father is quite elderly and fertile still, hatched this little fellow January 2006. Then I discretely hid behind a small tree outside the pen...well, he crows OK, nice full throated crow, not squeeky at all. Humm, well, what then...comb is nice and red, has adult feathers, chases hens...hey, wait a minute, chases, grabs neck but does not mount....well, that's odd. So, go into pen grab roo with intent to check for mites....no mites, but a HUGE wad of burdocks embedded in the fluff feathers. Long saddles and fluff hid all that. Just a word to the wise, from the unwise...huge grin. Pulled all the burrs out, and we'll see how he does NOW.
