They are easy to scoop up when you want to clean the coop out. Hay and straw tends to clump up making removal more difficult. For economical, you might want to consider the deep litter method where you just add another layer of clean shavings from time to time and only clean out the coop once or twice a year. You go through less shavings. A search on the phrase "deep litter" should give you more specific info.
