I go about 3 inches deep for the most part, but they scratch it around and get down to bare concrete around the feeder. In the winter when it gets damp I clean it all out, in warmer weather I'm probably not that thorough. I do sprinkle a little 5% Sevin in the clean litter when I change it to discourage parasites.
