Hi Carla -
My deepest sympathies. I, too, got "let go" in July of this year, after 7 years of practicing law. I decided to take some time off from my career as a result, and to travel and write and just find myself. I already have taken two week-long vacations (Florida and camping in the California redwoods) and after the holidays, I am planning a month-long trip to South America.
So here's my advice: use this free time to do something nice for yourself. Travel, take up a new hobby (or an old hobby you've forgotten), learn a new language, reconnect with old friends. Most of all, don't fret about the job market, or your next career move. At the end of your life, those things are really not important.
There are some really great books on the subject that I can recommend if you'd like. Again, I am sorry for your job loss, but look at it as a great opportunity!! Best of luck to you!
