Hi Sherry,
I just got on the computer for the first time today and read your post. I am so sorry that Evan had to go through all of that. I am thrilled that their are no bulging veins. I know that is something we all worry about. AJ used to have terrible nose bleeds when he had the ng tube. Thank goodness we have the mickey button now. We will keep Evan and your family in our prayers.
Take Care,
Melanie

: We are home. Evan's endoscope today revealed
: NO bulging veins from the liver disease.
: Praise the Lord!! An ENT came after lunch
: today and checked out Evan's nose with a
: camera & light attached to the end of a
: a very tiny tube. That too showed no
: enlarged veins.
:
: We did find some other news out that was
: unexpected. During the scope of the
: esophagus and stomach they found something
: called EE --eosiniphilic esophagitis. An
: eosinophil is a type of white blood cell
: that is sent out when the immune system
: thinks there are invaders. Too many of
: these cells that collect in one area can
: cause problems. In the esophagus it causes
: inflammation, narrowing and tissue damage.
: Some people eventually have trouble
: swallowing food. It is often misdiagnosed
: as GERD. Evan has had no symptoms like
: this, but we have thought he had allergies
: which are known to "trigger" EE in
: some people.
:
: They are not going to allergy test him right
: now to determine his allergice
: "triggers" because it requires
: skin patch testing....injections under the
: skin. He's been through too much lately
: & with the pending transplant we have
: other things to focus on. The high dose of
: steroids that are given post transplant
: should take care of clearing the eosinophils
: from his esophagus. So that is the plan for
: now with the EE.
:
: For his nose bleeds, we are assuming the
: sensitive nose is also due to allergies so
: they placed him on Zyrtec and saline nasal
: washes every four hours for the next month
: as well as bactraban ointment swabs of his
: nose. After a month, we are to use the
: saline washes just twice a day.
:
: Thanks for all your kind words. As always
: you guys are so supportive and uplifting.
:
: love,
: Sherry

: Yes, for the third time this month we
: traveled
: to Cinci for a visit with our home away from
: home. This time Evan decided it would be
: cool to travel via an ambulance from our
: local ER.
:
: Sunday morning he woke with a nose bleed and
: two hours later he was vomitting a great
: deal of blood. Three blood tests later and
: 36 hours later, his hemoglobin and
: hematacrit dropped substantially so he
: required a transfusion. Today he as been
: scheduled for an endoscopy to check for any
: varicasies (sp?)...bulging veins in his
: esophogus/stomach caused by portal
: hypertension. He has not vomitted any more
: since Sunday which is very good news. There
: is a good possibility that the blood came
: from a nose bleed that had slowly dripped
: down his throat all night long. He is in
: the spica cast for the borken femur so he is
: forced to sleep propped way up on his back.
: He might not have even noticed that the nose
: was even bleeding.
:
: But...just to be safe the endoscope should
: tell all.
:
: Side note: Evan has been doing great
: through this whole ordeal. He loves to
: order hospital food and he has been eating
: like a little piggy
:
: I will post again when we know more. The
: Lord has carried us through all of Evan's
: other medical situations and we know he will
: this time too
:
