Kelly,
Thanks for the tips. I try to do all of those things that you mentioned. Larsen's itching seems to occur mainly in or around her ears and her head. Sometimes she'll scratch at her chest, but I think I have noticed that she is usually playing with some design that is on her shirt or onesie. Whenever I see her itch, I try to put lotion on her ears. Have you ever tried Vanicream? A friend's husband has a strange disorder in which he experiences itching and the vanicream has helped him. They gave us a tube to use so we are trying it.
Can you tell me what an internal bile diversion is? Larsen had a Kasai procedure when she was a month old---where her liver is connected directly to her intestines...is that the same thing?
Did you ever go to the beach as a kid or to the pool? We are going to FL in a couple of weeks for a company vacation. I'm wondering how salt water or cholrinated water might affect her itching. and of course, we are planning to limit her direct sun exposure. Any thoughts on this?
Take care.

: Well, this is a somewhat complicated answer.
: I had the external diversion surgery in
: October 2003. It didn't make a difference
: for the first year or so, then it did for a
: while (which was amazing) and now its not
: making a difference again. So, on July
: 24th, I'm going to have the external
: reversed and made into an internal and see
: if that helps.
:
: My tips for controlling itching are: stay
: cool and moisturized - as much as your child
: hates it (I definitely did) keep their skin
: moisturized.
: Give them QUICK (the less time in water, the
: better) bath and then put lotion on
: immediately after, while the skin is still
: damp. I like Jergens Ultra Healing lotion,
: it is not greasy at all! Lightly wiping off
: the lotion after you apply it works also, to
: gets the excess off. I love washing my
: hands in cold water, it makes them feel SO
: much better, especially when they are itchy!
:
: Also, please do not tell your child to
: stop itching and ask your friends to do the
: same. When someone says this it embarrasses
: the child so much, they cannot control the
: itching, and they don't know any other way
: to deal with it. If your friends or your
: child's friends parents do not understand
: this, try explaining it like this: imagine
: having poison ivy or bug bites all over your
: body all the time and being so itchy! And
: please stress the fact that creams like
: benadryl does not help because the itch it
: not on the skin, its in the body!
:
: If you have any other questions, feel free
: to ask! If you can't already tell, I love
: answering questions : )

: Kelly,
:
: Thanks for the info. It was very helpful
: knowing what your experience was like. Do
: you still have itching now? How do you
: manage it?
