After assessing the immense damage caused by the disastrous floods that swept through a majority of their country, the Archbishop of Prague, Miloslav Cardinal Vlk, and the bishops of Ceske Budejovice, Litomerice and Plzen turned to the internatinal Catholic charity “Aid to the Church in Need” with an urgent plea for support. According to Cardinal Vlk, in the archdiocese of Prague alone, 30 parish churches, monasteries and other church buildings have been destroyed or heavily damaged by the floodwater. In particular he referred to the school centre run by Salesian nuns in a poor quarter of Prague which was completely flooded. Cardinal Vlk has formed a special “task force” of priests to work round the clock caring for the flood victims.
PRESS RELEASE
In Romania, following a severe drought in July, large regions in six dioceses are currently battling with the consequences of the disastrous floods. “Aid to the Church in Need” responded to these calls for aid with an emergency aid of $86,000 for the Czech Republic and Romania. The charity also plans to help rebuild destroyed or damaged church buildings in these countries and therefore calls upon all its benefactors to make a contribution to these efforts.
