Board member of ACN – Australia to be Ambassador to the Vatican
John McCarthy, a long-standing Board member of the international Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) in Australia, has been appointed as his country’s Ambassador to the Holy See.
McCarthy, a lawyer and Queen’s Counsel, is expected to take up his new office in September 2012.
Born in 1947 at Parkes in the Australian state of New South Wales, John McCarthy has held a variety of posts in university and government administrations; he is married and has six children.
In 2006, he was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Gregory the Great by the Holy See for his services to the Catholic Church in Australia.
Since 2012 he has also been an Honorary Fellow of the University of Sydney.
