BOLIVIA
1,000 Bibles for the diocesan Bible committee of Tarija
In his message to mark the beginning of the great Continental Mission in Latin America, which began last August, Pope Benedict XVI expressed the hope "that the Lord in these blessed lands may be each day better known, loved and praised and more closely followed". Ever since, and throughout Latin America, Catholics have been striving via a huge range of pastoral initiatives to respond to this appeal and become "true disciples of Christ".
In order to be able to develop a deep inner friendship and personal relationship with Jesus Christ it is essential to come to know the Word of God, to understand it and welcome it prayerfully into our hearts. But there are many people in this world who simply cannot afford a Bible. They include so many of the Catholic faithful in Tarija, in Bolivia. Bolivia is regarded as the poorest country in Latin America and two thirds of its population are living in poverty – 40% of them indeed in extreme poverty. This is fertile soil for the sects, who exploit the poverty of the people and sow false hopes. They have plenty of money and are able to distribute their Bibles and pamphlets for nothing.
Now the diocesan Bible committee in the diocese of Tarija wants to bring the people the Good News. Bishop Javier del Rio writes to us: "None of the members of the Bible committee receive any remuneration for their work. Instead each and every one of them sacrifices his or her own time in order to help proclaim the Good News". Their hope is, both in the towns and in the rural areas, to offer Bible courses above all for the catechists, so that they can then pass on the Word of God to the people in their parishes. Bishop del Rio has asked for help from the catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN). "We wish to thank all our generous benefactors in advance for making it possible for the Bible to reach those who most need it", he writes in a recent letter to the charity.
ACN has promised a grant of over $9,000 for 1,000 copies of the bible. To help this cause please contact the Australian office of ACN on (02) 9679-1929. e-mail: info@aidtochurch.org or write to Aid to the Church in Need PO Box 6245 Blacktown DC NSW 2148. Web: www.aidtochurch.org
