Construction of a multipurpose centre
The parish that has sent us this request is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. It has around 3,000 Catholic faithful and all the people of this parish, which lies in a remote and neglected region, are extremely poor. They grow a little rice, maize and cashew nuts, but the harvests are often poor and life is very hard. But their faith is very strong.
The parishioners are grateful to God for the fact that they do at least have a chapel, but many other parish activities have to be held out in the open for lack of a suitable space. Thus, for example, between 300 and 450 children come every Sunday for catechetical instruction, and the only shelter they have is a makeshift tarpaulin which affords little real protection from the sun and wind - since the trees are too small to provide any real shade. But despite this they listen, alert and attentive, since they want to learn more about God and the Good News of Jesus Christ.
A multipurpose hall would enable the parish to develop a much broader and more active parish life. Their parish priest writes, "We know that countless numbers of Christians are suffering all over the world and that we are only one group among many who are appealing to you". Nonetheless, he and his parishioners are still hoping that the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) can help them.
ACN has promised a grant of $28,000. To help this cause please contact the Australian office of ACN on (02) 9679-1929. e-mail: info@aidtochurch.org or write to Aid to the Church in Need PO Box 6245 Blacktown DC NSW 2148. Web: www.aidtochurch.org
