BURUNDI
Training of 32 catechists
In Africa the sects are advancing everywhere. Hence it is all the more important to provide a solid formation for the parish catechists, who not only carry out vital evangelisation work, helping the priests to cover their vast parishes, but also – as Bishop Jean Ntagwarara of Bubanza writes – help to promote a "culture of peace" here in a country plagued by a succession of ethnic civil conflicts.
Sister Marie Jeanne, a young religious who with the help of ACN is training as a catechist at the African catechetical Institute (ICA) in Muyange, Burundi writes to us, "When you feel you have a vocation for this, then you devote yourself to it heart and soul. As a catechist I know what I am working for and I want to go on working in the vineyard of the Lord however hard the road may be". But she is concerned, for she believes there are still far too few catechists being trained. "They are so greatly needed. I am so concerned. Who will be the catechists of tomorrow?"
the Catholic charity (ACN) has promised $28,000 so that 32 catechists can continue their training. They are young and full of zeal to serve God, the Church and the people of their parishes. ACN is supporting them and many other similar projects all over Africa.
