Support for elderly and sick religious sisters
The archdiocese of Maceió lies in the impoverished northeast of Brazil. Here the Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul run a house where they care for the poor, giving them physical moral and spiritual support.
This "house of the poor" (Casa do Pobre) has been in existence now for 70 years, and ten sisters are today kept fully occupied in caring for the poor and disadvantaged, seeking to ease their lives as much as possible. They give the best of themselves without regard for their own personal welfare.
Now seven of these sisters are themselves at an advanced age (between 73 and 88) and have now become frail and sick after decades of service to their fellow men. They urgently need support in their own physical infirmity. Their superior, Sister Mara José Barbosa, has turned to the international Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) for help. ACN has promised her $5,000 for their support.
If you would like to know more or make a donation please ring the ACN office on (02) 9679-1929 or e-mail: info@aidtochurch.org
