Training 35 seminarians in the archdiocese of Garoua
Garoua lies in the North of Cameroon and has some 290,000 inhabitants, making it the third largest city in the country, after Douala and the capital Yaoundé. Of the total population of around 18.5 million, around half are Christians (25% each Catholics and Protestants), some 20% Muslims and the rest and adherence of pagan natural religions. In 2006, for the first time in the history of the archdiocese, 10 young priests were ordained in Garoua. The mother of one of these young priests, herself a Muslim, declared, "I hadn't realised that Christians also pray earnestly to God". And indeed there are many vocations at the present time. Currently some 35 seminarians are studying for the priesthood. Needless to say, they need food, clothing, accommodation and books. And since the dioceses itself has very few resources of its own, Archbishop Antoine Ntalou has turned to the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) for help.
ACN has promised a grant of $21,000. To help this cause please contact the Australian office of ACN on (02) 9679-1929. e-mail: info@aidtochurch.org or write to Aid to the Church in Need PO Box 6245 Blacktown DC NSW 2148. Web: www.aidtochurch.org
