Training 47 seminarians of the archdiocese of Sarajevo
During the recent Balkan wars, Sarajevo was under siege by the Serbs from 5 April 1992 until 29 February 1996. During this time the Catholic population also suffered greatly. Since the end of the war there has only been a very tentative reconciliation between the various parties. Despite this, however, the Catholic Church has seen a flourishing of vocations with no fewer than 47 candidates for the priesthood this year in the Sarajevo seminary. 11 of these are new students in their first year of studies. The staff of the seminary includes 28 priests, 4 religious sisters and 16 general staff. Unfortunately economic recession and price inflation have hit this country too, and the grant needed by the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) to help maintain each candidate for the priesthood has risen to $1,000 per annum. On top of this there are the general costs of heating, lighting etc.
The assistance given to Fr Niko Ikic, the rector of the seminary, by ACN has the full support of Cardinal Vinko Puljic, the Archbishop of Sarajevo. The help decided on will amount to $47,000.
To help this cause please contact the Australian office of ACN on (02) 9679-1929. e-mail: info@aidtochurch.org or write to Aid to the Church in Need PO Box 6245 Blacktown DC NSW 2148. Web: www.aidtochurch.org
