SRI LANKA
Extension of the church of Our Lady of Velankanni
The diocese of Badulla lies in the southeast of Sri Lanka. The present church of Our Lady of Velankanni was built in 1980 and is now no longer big enough to accommodate all the parishioners. In fact, on rainy days, some of the congregation no longer turn up for Sunday Mass because there is no room for them inside the church. This is also the place where religious instruction is given to the children of the parish. Most of the congregation are Tamils, who work on the tea plantations, where they earn only a meagre wage. As the number of Catholics continues to grow, Bishop Winston Fernando of Badulla would like to enlarge the church. As he nor the parishioners have the necessary resources to take on this task the bishop has turned to the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) for help.
ACN has promised a grant of $18.000. To help this cause please contact the Sydney office of ACN on (02) 9679-1929. e-mail: info@aidtochurch.org or write to Aid to the Church in Need PO Box 6245 Blacktown DC NSW 2148. Web: www.aidtochurch.org
