SOLOMON ISLANDS
A formation house for the Daughters of Mary Immaculate
The Daughters of Mary Immaculate are a local congregation on the Solomon Islands, in the archdiocese of Honiara and the diocese of Auki. The Solomon Islands are an island group in the South Pacific comprising a nation with a total population of around 500,000 souls. They constitute one of the poorest nations in the region. The sisters are engaged in pastoral work, especially with women and families, but they also teach in the schools and in rural training centres and work in the hospitals as well. The house the sisters are currently living in is at least 70 years old and has extensive termite damage. They are therefore hoping to replace it with a new building, which will also contain a permanent formation centre for the novices. The building would include, among other things, a single classroom, a bookstore and eight bedrooms.
With the backing of her bishop, Archbishop Adrian Smith of Honiara, the Superior, Sister Anna Maria Ngosana has turned to the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need for help (ACN).
ACN has promised a grant of $20.000. To help this cause please contact the Sydney office of ACN on (02) 9679-1929. e-mail: info@aidtochurch.org or write to Aid to the Church in Need PO Box 6245 Blacktown DC NSW 2148. Web: www.aidtochurch.org
