JAMAICA
Formation of 119 Missionaries of the Poor and 75 novices
The Missionaries of the Poor were founded in 1981 by Father Richard Ho Lung. They work mainly with the homeless and with HIV/Aids patients. They currently have over 500 members, of whom 105 are novices. They are the first male congregation to have been founded in the Caribbean and are currently represented in Jamaica, Haiti, Uganda and the Philippines. Jamaica has a population of 2.8 million, of whom some 3% are Catholics. In the archdiocese of Kingston, where the congregation is mainly active, there are numerous slums and ghettos where violence and destitution abound. Here the missionaries care for the poor -- over 30,000 of them -- whom they help with food, clothing and healthcare. But evangelisation, instruction in the Catholic Faith and the celebration of the Sacraments likewise play a crucial role. In order to provide formation for their new vocations, the congregation regularly invites professors and teachers to Jamaica. It is for this last aspect that Father Ho Lung is requesting our financial support. The catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) has promised a grant of $30,0000.
