GHANA
A roof for the church of St John the Evangelist in Apowa
About one in eight of the approximately 22 million inhabitants of Ghana is Catholic. Apowa lies in the southwest of the country, about 4 or 5 miles (9 km) from the provincial capital Takoradi. It has a population of around 7,000 souls, most of whom belong to the Ahanta tribe. Most of the inhabitants are poor - either fishermen or peasant farmers, plus a few small traders. The Catholic parish church, built in 1930, has fallen into a very dilapidated state, with holes in the walls and many leaks in the roof. On top of this, it has now grown too small for the rapidly growing community. So it was that in 2005 the parish began work on a new church. However the project has never been completed to this day, owing to lack of money. But on the seventh of June this year, the old church finally collapsed during a heavy rainstorm and as a result it can now no longer be used as a church. The parish priest, Father Francis Gerald Appreh, has therefore turned to the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) for help to fund a new roof for the new church. This project has the full support of his Bishop, John Martin Darko of Sekondi-Takoradi.
ACN has promised a grant of $30,000. To help this cause please contact the Australian office of ACN on (02) 9679-1929. e-mail: info@aidtochurch.org or write to Aid to the Church in Need PO Box 6245 Blacktown DC NSW 2148. Web: www.aidtochurch.org
