PAPUA NEW GUINEA
A motorboat for the seminarians of the diocese of Bougainville
The diocese of Bougainville lies in the East of Papua New Guinea and has some 125,000 inhabitants, the great majority of whom are Catholics. The year 2001 finally saw the end of a 12-year civil war (known locally as "the crisis"), and now it has been agreed that by the year 2015 the people themselves will decide whether to vote for independence. Church centres and buildings have suffered especially from the conflict. At the same time, however, the number of seminarians has actually risen, and in the coming years the diocese is expecting to have eight new students in each year of the pre-seminary. A former school of agriculture on the east coast has been chosen as a suitable place to serve as a seminary. However, the road leading there was destroyed in the civil war, so that now the seminary can only be reached by boat. In order to assure the necessary supplies for his students, Bishop Henk Kronenberg has asked the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) for help to purchase a motorboat with outboard motor.
ACN has promised a grant of $8,500. To help this cause please contact the Sydney office of ACN on (02) 9679-1929. e-mail: info@aidtochurch.org or write to Aid to the Church in Need PO Box 6245 Blacktown DC NSW 2148. Web: www.aidtochurch.org
