Construction of a parish centre in Makhoul
In 1988 the Melkite Catholic Archieparchy of Akka, which covers the whole of Galilee, had some 63,720 faithful. However, this figure is sadly no longer accurate. Whoever can afford to do so, endeavours to leave the country. Since 1948 some 230,000 Arab Christians have left this region. Archbishop Elias Chacour, who has been archbishop of Akka since 2006, now fears that sooner or later he will find himself administering only empty churches as museums.
In an urgent appeal to the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) the Archbishop has asked for urgent help this remote, small and particularly poor community in Makhoul. It is already 10 years since the Catholics there began to collect money to build a parish centre. By now the basic structure is complete, together with windows, doors and basic plumbing. But the work keeps coming to a halt for lack of money.
ACN has promised the community a grant of $175,000 in two instalments, so that they can finally complete the building. To help this cause please contact the Sydney office of ACN on (02) 9679-1929. e-mail: info@aidtochurch.org or write to Aid to the Church in Need PO Box 6245 Blacktown DC NSW 2148.
