Completion of the church of St Christopher
The community of St Christopher's (Sao Cristovao) belongs to the parish of St. Peter of Alcāntara (Sao Pedro de Alcāntara) in the city of Floriano in northeast Brazil, the centre of the diocese of the same name. For many years the Catholics of St Christopher's have been striving to build a chapel. With the money raised locally they have already been able to complete the basic structure to the extent that it can now be used for Mass on Saturday evening and for other community activities. As a result many of the faithful have since begun to take an active part in parish life again. But a considerable amount of work remains to be done, including such important items as windows, doors, flooring, electrical wiring, plumbing and plastering, and of course painting. But this is an extremely poor area and the Catholic faithful simply cannot manage to give any more. Father Kleyton Vieira da Silva has written to the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) for help, with the full support of his Bishop, Augusto Alves da Rocha of Floriano.
ACN has promised a grant of $36,000. To help this cause please contact the Sydney office of ACN on (02) 9679-1929. e-mail: info@aidtochurch.org or write to Aid to the Church in Need PO Box 6245 Blacktown DC NSW 2148. Web: www.aidtochurch.org
