Training of catechists in Befandriana-Nord
The diocese of Ambanja lies in the northwest of Madagascar and serves a population of around 750,000 souls, of whom some 60,000 are Catholics. In the south of the diocese lies the parish of Befandriana-Nord, with around 8,000 Catholics and 60 small chapels. Altogether there are 80 catechists in the parish, who meet each month for four days for further training. These catechists fulfil their service entirely voluntary and without remuneration - yet money is needed for their training: for books, Bibles, catechetical texts, hymn books and many other similar things. On top of this there is the cost of furnishing the catechetical centre and the travel costs and board for the catechists. The diocese is very poor, and so the director of the mission district, Father Serge Rogovenko has turned to the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) for support, with the blessing of his Bishop, Odon Marie Arsène Razanakolona, of Ambanja.
ACN has promised a grant of $35,000. To help this cause please contact the Sydney office of ACN on (02) 9679-1929. e-mail: info@aidtochurch.org or write to Aid to the Church in Need PO Box 6245 Blacktown DC NSW 2148. Web: www.aidtochurch.org
