LEADERSHIP CHANGE AT ACN
In October this year there will be a change in the leadership of the international Catholic pastoral charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN). Mr Hans-Peter Röthlin, the current president of the organisation, which is under the jurisdiction of the Holy See, announced today that he had submitted his resignation and that this had been accepted by the relevant Vatican body, the Congregation for the Clergy. As a result, in October 2008 the former International Ecclesiastical Assistant of ACN, Father Joaquín Alliende-Luco will take over as the new president of ACN. Father Alliende was born in Chile and is a member of the Schönstatt movement.
Mr Röthlin, who has been president of ACN for the past nine years, explained that he was retiring, now that the overall situation of the charity was a stable one, in order to make way for the appointment of a priest as president, which is envisaged under the statutes as the normal situation. He will however continue to be at the service of ACN for a variety of specific tasks.
Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) is officially designated in Canon Law as a "public Association of pontifical right". The charity was founded in 1947 by the Dutch Norbertine priest, Father Werenfried van Straaten, who died in 2003. Today it supports projects in some 140 countries around the world and has fundraising offices in 17 different countries.
