Restoration of the chapel in Phat Thuong
The chapel in Phat Thuong was built in 1885 in the traditional Sino-Vietnamese style. It belongs to the parish of Phat Diem in the diocese of the same name in North Vietnam. The chapel is built of wood and is considered one of the most ancient and precious such churches in the region. However it has suffered greatly over the years, not least from the wartime years, and now its timber framework and beams are in serious danger of collapse. As a result it has become dangerous for the one hundred or so Catholics of the parish to attend Mass or meet for prayer here. But the people, who are practically all ordinary peasant farmers and very poor, cannot afford to repair it themselves and so their parish priest, Father Pierre Nguyen Hong Phuc has turned to the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) for help. The parishioners have already promised to do as much as possible of the manual work themselves.
ACN has promised Father Pierre a grant of $8,500 towards the cost of the work. To help this cause please contact the Australian office of ACN on (02) 9679-1929. e-mail: info@aidtochurch.org or write to Aid to the Church in Need PO Box 6245 Blacktown DC NSW 2148. Web:www.aidtochurch.org
