Setting up asterisk home phone ss

I've been working with a data cabling company for a couple of years but I've been working mainly for large institutions (government agencies, schools, etc).

I'm thinking of installing the asterisk phone system on our apartment units, I heard it has the benefits of regular PBX minus the high cost of installation. Has anyone tried this before? How well does it work? Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks!
