KX-T61610 and TD7896

Just bought a 9-yr old house with what I believe is a KX-T61610. I have a KX-TD7896 cordless that's not fully functioning when connected. The primary symptom is that the phone will not stay in normal "Standby" mode. I can access CO lines and dial successfully, but upon call completion, the phone zips through the "FUNC <-> F-CO" screen and displays the "while ringing" screen (i.e., only up/down/right and ringer off functions appear).

Is the phone not compatible (or only partially compatible) with the system?
