Robert Yong, chairman of UniBond League Premier Division club Eastwood Town, has announced that Paul Cox has signed a new four-year full-time contract as manager.
A delighted Yong said of Cox`s (pictured)decision: “After careful consideration, Paul has decided to leave his full-time teaching position at the end of May 2008 to focus on his football management career.
“Paul had interest from clubs in higher leagues and also so called `bigger clubs` at our level, but he preferred to continue at Eastwood.
“Paul’s new full-time role at the club will be much broader than before, with full responsibility, control and authority over all footballing matters both on and off the pitch.
“His long-term full-time commitment to the club is in line with my own personal and financial commitments that I have given to Eastwood Town FC. I am delighted that we will be able to work together for the duration of my time as chairman.
“In October 2007, we set a target of `challenging for the play-offs`, Coxy, John Ramshaw, the players and backroom staff have exceeded this target by winning two cups and finishing fourth in the UniBond Premier. I would like to thank and congratulate them for their outstanding achievements.
“We have a great bunch of lads and we will look to maintain the fighting spirit that has done so well for us this season, as well as adding more quality to the squad. Although winning cups is nice, the overwhelming priority for 2008/09 will be our league position.
“Following the 4-0 play-off loss against Gateshead, who only finished third, it is very clear that there is a significant gap to bridge for us to win promotion from the UniBond Premier. Being totally honest, this `gap` is bigger than I originally anticipated when I first took over as chairman. However, we will do everything we can to close it, at the very least, we are aiming to finish in the top three to gain a home advantage play-off place.
“Paul wants to further strengthen his squad over the summer break and he has the finances available to do this. However, new signings will take time to gel with our current squad, but if we can keep with the leading pack over the first ten games or so, we will get stronger as the season progresses.
“I ask all supporters to back Coxy and his team, judge us over the whole season, not just a few games. Fleetwood Town have shown us all that `it is never over until the fat lady sings`. Witton were 1/6 odds on with the bookies with ten games to go.
“We have some bumper games to look forward to next season – Worksop Town, Matlock Town, Buxton, Ilkeston Town and Hucknall Town will provide the `local interest`, and teams like Bradford Park Avenue and FC United of Manchester have an excellent away following. It would be fantastic to see more of our own supporters turn up in force at Coronation Park next season.”
