WHEN I OPEN UP MY MOUTH.
Altair saw the first of the black smoke, trickling towards him like some hideous inversion of the red-tide. Death, on red wings.
His air thrummed, hissing warnings he did not heed. The sickly sweet stench of the flames did not trick him - - he knew soon enough nausea would set in. With a desperate rallying cry he charged towards the heart of Solira, his Air his messenger.
“Let every bird and beast of Solira hear this –” He panted, his breath mingling with the choking smoke. His Air carried his voice across Solira with desperate efficiency, so that true to his wish, every horse could hear him. “Do not go to the ocean!” He cried out -- he recoiled in horror, his eyes wide in terror as he saw the water flare a savage red and boil before him. He slid to a screeching halt, turning once more inland. He reeled, already sick with exhaustion from the heat.
“Solira!” He coughed, his nostrils flaring as he inhaled fumes. The pain was terrible – he stumbled through the fire blindly like a mad-man, coughing as he desperately sought to help those already in its grip. “Go where there is nothing left to burn. His skin groaned and tightened with boils and burns, and each step was an agony he had never known before. His breath was drawn sharply in haggard gasps, his steps frenzied as the fire closed in around him and the last of his strength gave out.
When Altair awoke, the alacrity of his ailments shocked him. He could not move, hardly, even the effort of breathing was agonizing and strenuous. His Air whimpered by his side, and his skin was raw and bruised with heavily inflicted burns.
His first thought was for his herd-mates - - a look of horror and despair set over his charred features as his eyes set on the ruination around him. He scrambled to his feet, sharp gasps taken as the pain roared through his body. most of them he did not know, but it did not matter. His home, their home, had been ravaged mercilessly by the Elementals.
He half-limped, half ran towards the small group of equines, inspecting their injuries with an abject look of horror on his dark features. Moving was painful, but it was a necessity. He let out an inward sigh, the crippling effects of the Elementals clear on his once clear body. Come, Solirans, his Air hissed around them, summoning them to the burnt beyond recognition copse that was their usual gathering place.
He waited in silence until they came.
“We have no food.” He said forlornly, his somber eyes falling on each individually. “And something tells me we have no water.” He recalled the crashing sea last night, and how it had boiled violently and consumed any that sought respite from the flames. He winced as he shifted his weight, his eyes once more scanning each resident.
“I believe its time to call on our allies, if we have any - - perhaps the rogues would be hospitable and allow us temporary use of their lands.” His eyes flashed sadly as he recalled that the rogues were a savage race with their own problems.
