That being said, Solira is far gone, and Kratos isn’t only saying that because he’s an utter pessimist.
He drapes his muzzle across Courage’s back, and he contemplates, for a moment, the unlikelihood of his situation. He came here with his father dead. He was angry – so angry, in fact, that all he wanted to do was go to Desreal and challenge Kurai, even though he would definitely die in the process. Kyprioth is the reason why he didn’t do that. Kyprioth and Notte, who wasn’t keen on her son getting himself killed. Kratos could never reconcile his odd need to protect those who could not protect themselves with his natural inclination to hate everyone. One fateful morning he decided against his better thinking to help a little palomino filly, lost and alone and young on the seashore.
And somewhere along the way he discovered that he doesn’t, in fact, hate everyone.
“If we lose Solira, we’ll go to Ni’Srilan,” he says after a moment. Damn. He doesn’t even like to think about it. “I’ll join my stepbrother’s army, and he’ll make sure we’re safe.” He wrinkles his muzzle. “He’s also a psychotic, pretentious tool, so I’m going to do everything I can to see that it doesn’t come to that.”
The day Kratos has to go to Baraqel for help…
Ugh. Kratos used to always have Kyprioth talk to Baraqel for him. “My father, Saphira, and the Twits would probably come with us.” “The Twits” are Alanna and Dusan, who are not quite so young now but whom are still easily childish enough to piss Kratos off. Not that that’s hard to do. “We’re sure as hell not going to Desreal.” he snorts.
Kratos is fine with visiting the desert. He is not, however, keen to live there. “At this point, we can only do our best,” he pulls back and brushes her muzzle with his own, resting there for a moment before lifting his head to gaze steadily out across the expanse of overcast coastland. “If everyone else drops the ball – which would not surprise me, at all – then there’s nothing we can do.”
Kratos just hopes that the leaders and Alshain know what they’re doing.
Of course, he did catch Alshain jumping over a massive chasm in a cliff face earlier that morning. Which probably means, yeah, they’re screwed.
