The day Loti returned was the day a heavy mist blanketed Solira.
At first, the dunskin mare thought it was nothing. She approached along the shoreline, walking in the surf as if she were walking with an old lover she hadn't seen in weeks. There was her ocean, that she loved so much, and she could feel her connection with it as strong as the day she had found solira, and as strong as the day she had realized her element.
However, there was something off. Odd. As soon as she'd entered Solira proper, into the thick of the mist, something felt.. heavy, damp. As if someone had put a blanket over her head, where her element was. When she tried to use her elemental connection to water, it was as if the signals just weren't firing-- she could feel herself reaching out, and she could feel the water calling to her. There was just no.. result.
This put her on edge, when she realized what was happening. It was Not Good.
As she neared the heart of Solira, she became more and more on edge. At first, she couldn't pinpoint why. It was like she was being watched, by a million eyes she couldn't see. Occasionally, she would call into the mist, "Hello?", as if she thought there was someone just past her field of vision.
There never was. That didn't seem to stop her from seeing people, however-- figures of ghost horses, flickering in and out of sight. She would see them out of the corner of her eye, and would twist around suddenly to see.. nothing. Sometimes they would be strangers, and other times they would be someone she knew. Once or twice, they were even someone from her past, someone she knew to be dead.
That wasn't the worst, though. No, what unnerved her the most was when the figures didn't immediately dissipate. She would approach them, and they looked as solid as day, these hallucination ghosts. Sometimes they would be talking, to someone she couldn't see. And THESE figures were always beloved people from her past, and usually people she knew to be dead. It shocked her to her core, upset her fragile balance. She would approach them, and they would look so solid-- but the hallucinations were only visual, so when she could walk through these figures, it put her further on edge.
Once or twice, she even saw the figure of her children. These would be so real, she would squeel with joy and run towards them-- to go sailing through when she reached to nuzzle his or her neck. That got her the worst, because it made her wonder wildly if they was dead, or what. There couldn't possibly be logic to this, could there? She hadn't seen Psilo or Lya in years, but she had been talking to Peyote just hours ago, in Desreal..
One of the more familiar figures she saw in the mist was that of Desdemona. It also shook her deeply, for much the same reasons as the visions of her children did. Had the arabian mare died in her absence? For some reason, the idea of that chilled Loti to the bone.
An hour of wandering through Solira, and Loti was a nervous wreck. Were she a human, she would be near tears. As it was, she was shaking and looking around wildly. All these.. things haunting her. Loti didn't know what they were, hallucinations, ghosts, or what. And there, in the distance, Desdemona's figure was solidifying again, looking as real as when she had hallucinated it an hour ago. Almost angrily, she neared it, and it didn't dissipate. "DAMNIT," she called, voice shaking, "I KNOW you're not real, why are you teasing me? Are you dead or something?" Loti didn't stop walking. Not feet away, like she normally would-- no, she kept going as if to walk through Desdemona, since, after all, it was probably another hallucination.
Therefore, when Loti's head collided with Desdemona's side, she felt a thrill of shock run through her, followed by relief, fear, and other such conflicting emotions. "Wait? Are you really there? Alive? Not a ghost?" But the voice of suspicion in Loti was never quiet-- perhaps this was just another cruel twist to the ghosts she had been seeing. Were they taking on an air of solidarity now, to mock her further?
