Xanadu's deep, clear eyes looked away from the ever-motion of the sea, and the spread of pink across the sky, and clasped on the horse trotting along the beach towards him. His expression neutral, the big paint stallion tilted his head slightly to one side, curiously. His soft, two-tone mane cascaded like a black and white waterfall down his strong neck, the ends dancing slightly in the breeze.
His ears pricked, he took one step towards the stranger, his face alert and yet expressionless.
Unreal, the stranger told him. A crooked half-smile moved like an il-slick across his face, a brief light in his colourless eyes. Not quite, although a good guess. When Xanadu was in one of his calm, fanciful moods, hen he retreated to s place in his head that no other could find him, perhaps he did seem as if he was fading into the morning mist. But this stranger could not know what this monocoloured stallion wa slike when provoked - it was like lighting the wick to a stick of dynamite. Xanadu had, to say the least, a hot temper.
Lithium: so that was the stranger's name. It suited him - light, quick and burns with a hot flame. It sufficed. What surprised Xanadu was the name that Lithium gave to this place: Solira. He had almost forgotten that this land would have a name - in his head, this place was too beautiful, too calm and serene for a tag, a nickname. But Solira, it was perfect.
The ghost of a grin moved over his lips as he spoke in his rough, deep tones, so long unused.
"Yes, I am a stranger to this place. I have never seen the sea before, only heard tales of it."
He admitted this with no sense of shame or inferiority - just a statement of fact, as expressionless as his shadowed face.
"I am Xanadu, and I am pleased to meet you, Lithium."
He gave a small incline of the head as he spoke, his words old-fashioned and formal. Indeed, he could amost be as Lithium implied: a creature from a fairy tale, a vision in a dream.
a vision in a dream; a fragment
