Since I grew up on 6th Avenue (later, and now Constitution Ave.), I well remember Bootsie's and Modlin's. As I recall, for some strange reason, most of the Baptists at Calvary Baptist who lived in the neighborhood shopped at Bootsie's, and most of the Cottage Place Methodist folks who lived nearby shopped at Modlin's. Many of you may also remember Mr. Byrd's Blue Star Superette over in Port Norfolk. Oh thank Heaven that 7-11 all but destroyed most of these little places. NOT!!! They and their kind were irreplaceable pieces of Americana.
