I was out this evening at an entertaining, inspiring, and moving program at The Writers Place here in Kansas City. Professional writers talked about their love of reading and writing, but the most touching part of the show was the adult literacy students who went up to a mic and read some of the first things they had ever written. One was a new U. S. citizen, several had been passed through school without learning to read. Most were middle-aged people trying to get better jobs or to read to their kids. And I was thankful once again for the superb English teachers I had at Wilson and the teachers I had in earlier grades.
And thanks to a mother who'd have made sure I could read if the schools had not.
Thanks to Mrs. Crews, Miss Stewart, Mr. Wheeler, and Mrs. Howard.
