Wilson 28, Menchville 27
Playing under the lights at home for the first time, the Presidents (1-1) claimed the victory on a strange decision by Menchville (0-2).
Trailing by one, the Monarchs (0-2) elected to go for a 2-point conversion even though their kicker had made three consecutive extra points. And 5:11 remained in the game.
Quarterback Der’Woun Greene passed for one touchdown, ran for another and made a 2-point conversion run as Wilson (1-1) snapped a five-game losing streak.
He also made a game-saving fumble recovery on the Wilson 6 with 43 seconds left.
Wilson athletic director Jack Kennedy said 1,600 tickets were printed and that all were sold. The crowd was the largest at a home Wilson game ever.
Key stats: M–Clifton Richardson 25-108 rushing and 77-yard kickoff return for TD. W–Derrick Knight 11-86 TD rush; Rayshad Riddick 5-47 TD receiving.
He said it: “It’s a new day, a new era. This game, as good as it feels, is over and we must look at the next one” – Wilson coach Carlton Thomas.
