I don't seem to remember that quote. Chapter & verse, please?
Every time a Christian expresses an opinion someone accuses him, or her, of being self-righteous and considering himself better than someone else. If THAT is indeed true of everyone who expresses an opinion, what does that make non-Christians and "nominal" Christians who do the same?
As for mis-rendering Scripture, Scripture, and Paul's writings specifically, address the dangers of doing so.
Regardless of Carter's comments, I, and you, and everyone has a right to express our views on the behavior of others. Judging behavior is OKAY. Judging another's "State of Grace" or Salvation is what is Biblically proscribed. The world would have Christians believe otherwise in order to silence the voices of Christians who dissent from "the wisdom of this world."
When Christ said not to cast the first stone, an actual stoning was about to take place. Christ, Himself, spoke openly against sinful behavior. As did Paul, and the other apostles. As should all Christians in an appropriate manner at appropriate (non-gossipy) times.
It is important to remember that Satan, himself, tempted Christ in the Wilderness Trials which Christ endured, by changing and mis-quoting Scripture. Christ defeated him, by quoting Scripture BACK to him correctly.
