I'm not certain of this but I believe the civil war fort you mention in your second item, above, might be Fort Boykin. It was a rebel gun emplacement used to thwart federal gunboats from going up the James River to Richmond. It was built on the site of a branch settlement from the old Jamestown colony two centuries earlier.
Some 20 years ago, while convalescing from a serious work accident, I was taken there by a firend on an outing just to get my mind off the pain I was in. Knowing my interest in history, and sharing it, he thought, correctly, that the old fort would be of interest to me. It was. We tramped around there a good bit that day, even though my left arm was in a sling.
I have contacted my buddy about this trip today today and based on the information he relayed to me I believe this might be the answer to your inquiry.
