Well Ken, that depends. Were they completely round or conical shaped? If they were conical and had 1 grease groove or no grease groove around the base they were usually Confederate. If they were round and fairly large calibur they might even have been from colonial times.
I have friends who have been relic hunting for decades here in Tidewater and various battlefields mainly here in Va. These guys have litteraly thousands of Minie balls, cannon balls, shrapnel, belt buckles, even rifles in various stages of decay and rust and, canteens.
It is getting much harder to find relics because of the number of people who have been doing this for so long. At this point I would not melt them down.
