Dave, I can only even begin to approach question #1. I believe Airline was widened to 4-lane divided in 1959, but that date is an approximation. That was just before the time that my folks and I started going to that new fancy drive-in on Airline called the "Charco-Burger", and I sort of remember Airline at that time being a large roadway.
Another interesting fact of Portsmouth roads history... The existing man-made lake in Green Lakes area (just west of Hodges Ferry Road near Airline Blvd.) provided the earth used to build the overpasses that comprise I-264...thanks to the many digging machines provided by George T. McLean Construction. That was in the late '50's and early '60's also.
