While some people might think I am yet again trolling and gravedigging, I have several questions to ask, concerning Portsmouth and Chesapeake history.
#1)Does anyone recall the year that Airline Blvd. was paved from either High St. or Frederick Blvd. at least out to Alexanders corner? I have seen a photo of Mosberth's Chicken at Airline and Rodman Ave. from the 1940's and it appeared that Airline was still nothing but compacted dirt and maybe gravel.
#2) Does anyone have any information on the earthen Civil War fort to the west of Goose Creek and, the intersection of Dock Landing Rd. and Jolliff Rd. in Chesapeake?
#3) Does anyone have any knowledge of the eartworks which started somewhere in the vicinity of Battery Park Rd. off G.W. Highway just south of the Portsmouth/Chesapeake city line. From what I have been able to gather, these earthworks had an artillery redoubt which ended up becoming part of the Brentwood Vet. Clinic Cemetary, crossed over Deep Creek Blvd. Victory Blvd. just north of the oh-so new Victory Crossing to just south of a really nice old residence back just west of Oregon Ave. which was used as a Union Command Post and Hospital?
#4) Does anyone know of the whereabouts of the family home of Capt. Cary F. Grimes, commanding the Portsmouth Light Artillery during the Civil War. He was mortally wounded at the Battle of Sharpsburg, Maryland, Sept. 17, 1862. His frock coat, BTW, is on display at the museum at the Old Ferry Landing on High Street.
#5) Does anyone have any knowledge of the old shipworks at the northwest edge of Port Norfolk, next to the old iron West Norfolk Bridge? That's the old, old swing drawbridge. I wish I had a penny for every time me, my brothers and, friends used to climb that rusty old hulk and dive off head first.
Another item of interest for those enlightened and history minded souls, a number of years ago I went relic hunting just west of where the new WAVY TV-10 studio was being built. This area had been brutally cleared with bulldozers. Yet, I was able to walk around and found many pounds of broken clay tobacco pipes, hundreds of shards of light creme and blue colored Delftware china and pottery shipped here from England, several iron shoe buckles, a silver combination toothpick and earwax removal device. Yum, that was a real good find! And some old brass colonial era coat buttons.
These are all legitimate questions that have been asked of me in an effort to preserve our history. If anyone can help me, I would be very grateful.
Kindest Regards,
Dave Kaisler
