Hey, Mr. Gary-Mon. I apologize for coming down so hard on you. Mea culpa. It was an Ad Hominem attack, and did not fairly address your assertions. My abject apologies.
I have travelled a bit in my life, also. South to FL, west to New Mexico (missed CA, darn it), and north to Ct. Also, courtesy of a 4-year degree in NAVY, as far east as Constantinople (Istanbul, Turkey). I have also lived in a few other cities. The District of Criminals (Washington) was one of my favorite in 1970, but I wouldn't even stop my car there today, much less get out of it.
I've just always felt at home in Portsmouth, and, having been given the same blessed choices as yourself, I've chosen to live here. Believe me, Gary, if I'd found it unliveable, I would not have returned. I could leave tomorrow, and get a job in my profession, commercial electric sign design, in any state of this dis-union.
Believe it or not, my grammatical skills (such as they are) were burned into my brain by six years of English classes at Harry Hunt, and good ol' WWHS. Sadly, my lowly degree from the Old Dim-Onion Univerity is only in art. It has, however, helped to feed & clothe me and mine for many years. No, I'm not a famous artist. I'm the art director for a great metropolitan sign company in Chesapeake.
I just truly believe that many of our alumni who have left for greener pastures do not really have any grasp on what it's like living in the old home berg today. You should appreciate these next few lines, Gary old pal. I wrote them, and I still laugh at them.
"If you go to a nightclub in P-Town, they frisk you for weapons. If they don't find a gun on you, they loan you one in order to let you in!" Trust me, Mr. G-Mon, that's gonna piss off a whole lot more "stay heres" than it will "went theres"! It's one of those little urban legends that we use back here in "Homeyville" to discourage too much immigration.
Many of us cherish this misapprension of the old place because it helps to keep out the damned liberal northern "come heres" who want to turn our little "middle eastern" city into a carbon copy of the nasty, stinking, crowded, over-regulated places that they left behind. They are the ones who just "don't get it".
So anyhow, where's y'all a-livin' these days, old sport? Don't worry. We ain't wantin' ta hunt ya down. Some of us are jist a tad curious. Live long and prosper, ol' Gary pal. I do well remember you and your wonderful sense of WWHS humor.
Is that light enough for you Gary-Mon?
